Printer Repairs

Printer repairs are available for two major printer technologies. These technologies can be broken down into two main categories with several in each:

Impact - These printers have a mechanism that touches the paper in order to create an image. There are two main impact technologies.

Dot matrix printers use a series of small pins to fire at a ribbon coated with ink, causing the ink to transfer to the paper at the point of impact. Manufacturers of dot matrix printers include IBM, Epson, OKI and Hewlett Packard. On-site printer repair for Dot Matrix printers start at ££69.00

Character printers are basically computerized typewriters. They have a ball or series of bars with actual characters (letters and numbers) embossed on the surface. The appropriate character is struck against the ink ribbon, transferring the character's image to the paper. Character printers are fast and sharp for basic text, but very limited for other use. Printer repairs are less commonplace for this older technology. We can offer workshop repairs for these printers for ££44.00 per hour plus parts.

Non-impact - These printers do not touch the paper when creating an image. Inkjet printers are part of this group, which includes:

Inkjet Printers, which are described in this article, use a series of nozzles to spray drops of ink directly on the paper. Common inkjet printers are HP DeskJet range, Epson Stylus range, Modern plotters are based on this technology but on a larger scale and have carriage lengths of up to 60. Most commonplace are the Hewlett Packard DesignJet range. On-site hp plotter repairs start from ££159.00

Laser printers use dry ink or toner as it is more commonly know, static electricity, and heat to bond the toner onto the paper. Most of our printer repairs are concentrated around this technology. Common laser printer models are Hewlett Packard LaserJet, Lexmark Optra and Epson Acculaser..

Solid ink printers contain sticks of wax-like ink that are melted and applied to the paper. The ink then hardens in place. Tektronix or Xerox as they are now known, often use this technology. Prices for Tektronix or Xerox printer repair are available on request.

Dye-sublimation printers have a long roll of transparent film that resembles sheets of red-, blue-, yellow- and grey-coloured cellophane stuck together end to end. Embedded in this film are solid dyes corresponding to the four basic colours used in printing: cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK). The print head uses a heating element that varies in temperature, depending on the amount of a particular colour that needs to be applied. The dyes vaporize and permeate the glossy surface of the paper before they return to solid form. The printer does a complete pass over the paper for each of the basic colours, gradually building the image. Prices for dye sublimation printer repair are available on request.

Thermal wax printers are something of a hybrid of dye-sublimation and solid ink technologies. They use a ribbon with alternating CMYK colour bands. The ribbon passes in front of a print head that has a series of tiny heated pins. The pins cause the wax to melt and adhere to the paper, where it hardens in place.

Thermal autochrome printers have the colour in the paper instead of in the printer. There are three layers (cyan, magenta and yellow) in the paper, and each layer is activated by the application of a specific amount of heat. The print head has a heating element that can vary in temperature. The print head passes over the paper three times, providing the appropriate temperature for each colour layer as needed.

Wear and tear on laser printers in businesses and other organizations cause printers to break down with frequency. As in most cases, we believe that some printers are more reliable than others i.e. Hewlett Packard LaserJet and Lexmark Optra. For most printers, the manufacturer's warranty covers parts and labour for a one year period after the product was purchased, and allows for replacement of defective products at no charge. In many cases, warranty extensions such HP Support packs can be purchased at the time of the original sale, providing service for three or even five years. However, as a specialist, our callout and workshop repair charges are often drastically cheaper

As plotter repairs specialists, our aim is to get your printer up and running as soon as possible so here are several basic troubleshooting techniques you should be able to perform on your own machine before sending it on to us.

Always make sure that the printer/plotter is plugged in. Often the power cable will become loosened over time or if it has been moved and, without power, the printer will not print.

Confirm that the toner cartridge (on laser printers) or the ink tank or cartridge (on inkjet printers) is properly attached and is not empty. On dot-matrix printers, check the condition and status of the ribbon. Empty or nearly empty cartridges can produce a variety of print quality errors. Please remember that a toner cartridge or ink tank does not necessarily last as long as it says it does!!

Run the printer's self-diagnostic software (if it shipped with the printer). This software may be able to remedy some common problems for your particular model of printer.

Check that the paper is loaded in the printer correctly as this is often the cause of many paper jams and miss-feeding faults. If your printer is still not functioning correctly, please call us for a plotter repair or printer repairs.
